Three dimensional X-ray exams are now available to the general public of the Mohawk Valley through referral by the patient's general dentist or specialist. The equipment is called a cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) machine, and it provides dentists with far more information for diagnostic purposes than do traditional X-rays because it offers a third dimension to the picture, depth. In addition, the software which operates the system allows the dentist to view structures in slices -- a virtual dissection of the area of interest. This capability provides the ultimate in accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
This device nicely complements the other advanced technology in Dr Hebert's office: surgical operating microscope, digital regular x-rays, surgical laser, and advanced equipment for sealing root canals thoroughly.
The CBCT has several advantages over medical cat scans: far less radiation, small area of exposure, shorter proceedure (45 seconds vs. several minutes), and far less cost
which will eventually be covered by dental insurance.
The CBCT also has several important uses including determing the true extent and location of all jaw infections, orientation of impacted wisdom teeth in relation to other structures such as nerves and vessels, and proper site location for dental implants. Anyone who is anticipating complex orthodontic treatment, periodontal or root canal surgery , retreatment of a failed previous root canal case, wisdom tooth extraction, or implant placement should be sure to ask the general dentist or specialist whether a CBCT scan would be appropriate to their treatment. If recommended, I welcome you to my office for what promises to be a quick, simple, affordable, and comfortable proceedure which will provide you and your dentist with invaluable information to assist with your upcoming treatment.
